Laura Strom DVM

Dr. Strom has been serving veterinary patients and their families in the Portland area since 1993.  She began her training at Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology.  Originally interested in working with wildlife as a veterinarian, she was fortunate to be a part of the State of Alaska’s efforts to help Prince William Sound recover after the Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989.  Realizing that wildlife medicine would mean less attention to individual animals needs, she opted to work as a companion animal veterinarian following graduation with her veterinary degree in 1993.  Her initial love for working with animals grew to be equally strong in working with families and helping to partner with them for the benefit of their companions.

During her veterinary career Dr. Strom has developed her interests in dentistry, animal behavior, internal medicine, senior pet care, and most recently in veterinary acupuncture.  Blending the experience of her conventional training and newly acquired “eastern” medicine to best serve the needs of pets,  she now practices “integrative” veterinary medicine offering options of conventional medicine as well as acupuncture and herbal/natural therapies.  After years of practice in a busy veterinary hospital setting, she found increasing enjoyment in the occasional house call and the calmer atmosphere those situations provided for both family and pet.   Extra Mile Veterinary Care was conceived in the effort to provide comprehensive, experienced, and holistic veterinary care for those clients who share the desire for more time and attention to detail, away from the tightly scheduled conventional clinical setting.

Dr. Strom resides in the Portland area with her husband, two children, and a very busy Beagle mix.  When off duty,  she enjoys cooking, gardening, sewing, playing harp and piano for family and friends, travelling with her family,  and talking with students about veterinary medicine.
